These pumpkins are round and orange. They have smooth skin with small ribs. Most pumpkins grow along the ground. But these pumpkins grow upright. This makes their bottoms flat. A flat bottom helps them stand up. This makes them great for carving jack-o'-lanterns.

Native Americans used these pumpkins for a long time. They used them for food and medicine. Some tribes ate the seeds to stay healthy. They also used the pumpkin to make bread. American colonists learned how to grow them from Native Americans. They learned to plant corn and potatoes near the pumpkins. This helped them get more food from the field.

It takes about 110 days to grow a pumpkin. Farmers must watch for a pest. It is a striped cucumber beetle. This bug can hurt the crop. When the pumpkin is not green anymore, it is ready. Farmers use shears to cut the stem. They leave a small part of the stem on the fruit.
