He was born on October 22, 1821, in Harwinton, Connecticut. As a boy, he helped his family on their farm. He worked hard and saved his money from odd jobs. Later, he traveled as a salesman. He eventually moved to California during the gold rush. In Sacramento, he sold supplies and tools to miners. This helped him become a successful merchant.

Huntington helped build the first transcontinental railroad in America. This was a huge project to connect the east and west. He was part of a group called the Big Four. This group included Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker. They formed the Central Pacific Railroad in 1861. Huntington worked hard to negotiate where the tracks would meet. In April 1869, they agreed on a spot in Utah. On May 10, 1869, the tracks finally joined at Promontory Summit.

To celebrate the new railroad, people used a golden spike. This spike was a gift from a banker named David Hewes. The Big Four also helped start the Southern Pacific Railroad. This line grew to have more than 9,000 miles of track. Huntington also worked on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. This railroad was finished in 1873. It connected the James River in Richmond to the Ohio River Valley. This was a long-held dream for many people in Virginia.

His work helped create many new places and businesses. A new city in West Virginia was named Huntington to honor him. He also helped build the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. This became the largest privately owned shipyard in the United States. He helped develop the coal business in West Virginia too. This allowed coal to reach ships at Hampton Roads for export. His family members, like Henry and Archer, continued his work later. They are all seen as founding fathers of that community.

Many things Huntington started are still important today. The Southern Pacific became part of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Chesapeake and Ohio became part of CSX Transportation. West Virginia coal still moves by rail to reach the coast. A huge shipyard called Huntington Ingalls Industries still works in Newport News. Even though he was sometimes seen as a tough businessman, his work changed the country. His life shows how railroads connected far away places together.
