Rogers learned how the oil business worked through hard work. In 1861, he and a friend named Charles Ellis started a small refinery. They named it the Wamsutta Oil Refinery in Pennsylvania. They used $600 of his savings and borrowed another $600. They made $30,000 during their very first year. This was a lot of money for that time. Later, Rogers invented a better way to separate naphtha from crude oil. Naphtha is a liquid made during the oil refining process. He received a U.S. patent for this invention in 1871.

His rise to power involved many big changes in business. In the 1870s, he fought against unfair railroad deals. A group called the South Improvement Company used secret rebates. These were special lower prices given only to certain companies. Rogers led a group of refiners to stop these shady dealings. This helped make railroad prices more open to everyone. In 1874, he joined John D. Rockefeller at Standard Oil. Rockefeller liked Rogers' talent for making deals and negotiating.
