It sits right by the Caribbean Sea near the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal. The city is located on the Manzanillo Peninsula, which used to be an island. It is surrounded by Limon Bay, Manzanillo Bay, and the Folks River. As the capital of the Colón Province, it is often called Panama's second city. This place is a vital link for ships moving through the region.

Building the city was a big job that changed the land. In 1850, the city was founded to be the end of the Panama Railroad. This railroad helped people travel quickly to California during the Gold Rush. To make room for buildings, workers drained parts of the original island. They also built a causeway to connect the land to the mainland. Today, the city has grown much larger through land reclamation on the Folks River. This work helped expand the Colón Free Trade Zone.

History has brought both growth and hard times to Colón. Early on, some people called the town Aspinwall after a railroad promoter. Others called it Colón to honor the explorer Christopher Columbus. The city faced many difficult moments, including several large fires. A huge fire in 1940 destroyed one-third of the city. There were also times when the city was an exclave. This meant it was entirely surrounded by the Panama Canal Zone.

The weather in Colón is very wet and tropical. Strong trade winds blow moisture from the sea onto high mountains. This brings a lot of rain throughout the year. From June to December, the rain is so heavy that Colón is one of the wettest cities in Central America.

Because of the rain in February and March, it has a monsoon climate. This is a bit different from the rainforest climate found in nearby coastal areas.

Many different people have lived in and visited Colón over the years. The population grew from about 3,001 people in 1900 to over 200,000 by the year 2000. Most people living there today have West Indian or mixed mestizo ancestry. Many famous people, like baseball player Rod Carew, have connections to the area. In 2014, a large project began to fix up the city. This project focuses on making new parks, roads, and historic monuments.
