life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The coconut is a very important fruit from the palm family. It comes from the coconut palm tree, which is a large plant. These trees love bright sunlight and lots of rain. They do not like cold weather at all. A single tree can grow many fruits every year. Most trees grow about 30 fruits each year. Some very healthy trees on good soil can grow 80 fruits. New kinds of trees might even grow 150 fruits a year.

To understand the fruit, you can look at its three layers. The outside is a glossy skin called the exocarp. Under that is a thick, hairy layer called the mesocarp. This hairy part is known as coir. The inside layer is a hard shell called the endocarp. This shell has three small holes at one end. Two of these holes are plugged, which look like eyes. Inside the shell, you will find coconut water. You will also find the solid meat, which is called the endosperm.

People have used coconuts for a very long time. Many people in the tropics eat the coconut meat as part of their meals. You can make coconut milk and oil from the meat. The hard shells can be turned into charcoal. The hairy husk can be used to make coir. People even make sweet drinks from the tree sap. In some places, the sap is turned into vinegar or wine.

History tells us how coconuts spread around the world. They first grew in the central Indo-Pacific region. Long ago, Austronesian peoples moved across the ocean in boats. They carried coconuts with them to new islands. These fruits provided food and water during long sea trips. Later, sailors from South Asia and Europe spread them to other coasts. Today, Indonesia, India, and the Philippines produce most of the world's coconuts. In 2023, the world produced 65 million tonnes of them.

Coconuts are special in many different ways. For many people, they are part of their religion and stories. In South Asian cultures, coconuts are used in Hindu weddings. In the past, the name "coconut" came from a Portuguese word. That word meant "head" or "skull." This was because the three holes on the shell look like a face. It is amazing how one fruit can do so much for the world.
