Cocktail dress

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A cocktail dress is a special kind of dress. People wear them to semi-formal parties. These parties often start after 5:00 p.m. Guests wear them to feel fancy but stay comfortable. This helps them walk around and meet new people.

In the 1920s, these dresses became very popular. American styles were made to be useful. A woman could use accessories to change her look. French designers made a different style. They made loose clothes called beach pajamas. These were made of soft silk. They often had wide pants called palazzo pants.

After World War II, styles changed again. A designer named Christian Dior made the "New Look." These dresses had tight waists and full skirts. They looked very romantic.

People often wear many things with a cocktail dress. They might wear pearl necklaces or large jewelry. They might also wear gloves or a cocktail hat. Some people wear high heels or satin sandals. In the 1950s, many women wore costume jewelry. This is jewelry that is not made of real gold or gems. It was a fun way to look bold and rich.
