A cockatiel has a crest on its head. This crest shows how the bird feels. It stands up tall when the bird is excited. It lays flat when the bird is angry. When the bird is tired, the crest stays halfway up.

Most wild cockatiels are grey. Males often have yellow faces. Females usually have grey faces. Both have orange patches on their cheeks. These colors come from pigments. One pigment is called melanin. It makes the grey colors. Another is called psittacofulvins. It makes the yellow and orange colors.

Cockatiels can be great pets. They can learn to mimic sounds. Some can even learn to sing songs.

In a home, they may live for 16 to 25 years. One bird lived to be 36 years old!
