They teach players new skills. They also help players feel brave. This is called building confidence. Coaches help players grow in four main ways. These are called the 4 C's. They stand for competence, confidence, connection, and character. Competence means being good at the sport. Connection means making friends on the team. Character means being a good person who shows respect.

Coaches must also keep players safe and healthy. They often work with a large staff. This team might include doctors or food experts. Some experts study how the body moves. Others study how the mind works.

In different sports, the job can change. In soccer, a coach helps young players learn the rules. In ice hockey, a coach picks which players play in a game. In baseball, the leader is often called a manager. In cricket, the team captain makes many big choices. Even with these differences, all coaches help athletes do their best.
