Cloudflare

Cloudflare is a large technology company based in San Francisco, California. It helps make the internet work better and stay safe for everyone. The company provides many services like a content delivery network, which helps websites load faster. It also offers cloud cybersecurity to protect data. One of its main jobs is acting as a reverse proxy. This means it stands between a website visitor and the hosting provider. This setup helps improve speed and blocks malicious traffic from reaching a site.

As of January 2026, about 21.3% of all websites use Cloudflare.

To keep information safe, Cloudflare uses a very clever way to create secret codes. They use a method called Lavarand to make encryption keys. At their headquarters, they have a wall of lava lamps. A camera watches the unpredictable shapes of the moving lava blobs. It turns these shapes into a digital image. This creates true randomness for the keys. They also use double pendulums in London and a Geiger counter in Singapore to get this randomness. This helps ensure that the digital locks on the internet stay strong.

Cloudflare was founded on July 26, 2009. Three people started the company: Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway, and Michelle Zatlyn. They chose the name Cloudflare because it described a "firewall in the cloud." A firewall is a tool used to block bad things. In 2019, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange. It used the ticker symbol NET. Since then, the company has grown by buying many other tech companies. They have acquired groups like Area 1 Security and Replicate to add new tools.

One of the most important things Cloudflare does is stop DDoS attacks. A DDoS attack happens when many computers try to crash a website at once. These attacks can be huge. In 2023, Cloudflare blocked an attack with 71 million requests per second. In December 2025, a massive attack called "The Night Before Christmas" hit the telecommunications sector. This attack used a botnet named Aisuru. It reached a speed of 31.4 terabits per second. Cloudflare also helps people through Project Galileo. This program provides free protection for artists, journalists, and human rights groups.

Cloudflare is now using artificial intelligence to help manage the web. They launched Workers AI to let developers use powerful chips in their network. They also made a tool to stop bots from scraping websites. In 2025, they announced a feature called AI Labyrinth. This tool fights unauthorized data scraping by showing fake content to AI bots. They even have an AI assistant to help make charts. By using these new tools, Cloudflare helps keep the digital world organized and secure for all users.
