The company helps make the internet fast and safe. It acts as a reverse proxy. This means it stands between a visitor and a website. This helps block bad traffic. It also helps websites work better.

Cloudflare was started in 2009. Matthew Prince, Lee Holloway, and Michelle Zatlyn founded it. They chose the name to describe a "firewall in the cloud." A firewall is a tool that blocks bad things.

The company uses very neat tools. At their main office, they use lava lamps. A camera watches the moving blobs. This creates randomness for encryption keys. These keys are used to make secret codes.

Cloudflare also protects against DDoS attacks. These are attacks that try to crash a site. One huge attack in 2025 was very large. It was called "The Night Before Christmas." Cloudflare also helps schools stay safe online. They have a program for this. Many websites use Cloudflare today. About 21.3% of all websites use it.
