Clothing industry

technology Maturity 13-18 Next article →

The clothing industry is a huge part of the world economy. It includes many different jobs and steps to make what we wear. This includes the textile industry, which makes fibers from things like cotton or wool. It also includes the fashion industry, which sets new styles. Other parts include making clothes, selling them in shops, and even recycling old fabrics.

This whole system is often called the garment industry or the soft goods industry.

Making clothes happens in a specific way. First, textile factories, also called mills, turn natural or synthetic materials into yarn. This yarn is then used for weaving or knitting to create textile cloth. Next, apparel mills take that cloth and turn it into wearable pieces.

Some tools like the loom and the sewing machine helped this process grow very fast. These machines changed how people made clothes in the past.

History shows that women have always been a big part of this work. In the years 1381 and 1700, many women found jobs in textile manufacturing. As sewing machines became popular, many women became "outworkers" who worked from home. In 1901, a census in Bristol, England, showed that women were nearly one-third of the clothing workforce.

Today, many women still move from rural farms to big cities to find factory jobs. In Cambodia, about 80 percent of garment workers are women who move to Phnom Penh.

Different countries lead the world in making clothes. In 2016, China was the largest exporter with $161 billion. Other big exporters included Bangladesh at $28 billion and Vietnam at $25 billion.

However, working in these places can sometimes be very hard or unsafe. In 2013, a building in Bangladesh called Rana Plaza collapsed. This tragic event caused the deaths of 1,134 people. Now, many more people check factory safety very closely.

You can see how the clothing industry connects to your own life. When you buy a new shirt, you are part of a global chain. Some parts of the industry focus on design and modeling in cities like Milan or New York. Other parts focus on making huge amounts of clothes in places like Guangdong, China.

As technology grows, many factories are using more machines to help make things. This helps them stay productive even when the cost of labor goes up.
