Clostridium

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Clostridium is a large group of tiny germs. We call these germs bacteria. Many types of Clostridium live in soil. They also live inside the guts of animals and humans.

These bacteria are special because they are anaerobes. This means they live in places without air. They can also make endospores. These are tough parts that help them survive.

Some Clostridium can make people sick. One kind causes tetanus. Another kind causes botulism. This can happen from wounds or bad food. One type also causes food poisoning.

But these germs are not all bad. Doctors use a toxin from one kind for Botox. This medicine helps smooth facial muscles. Scientists also study them to help fight cancer. Some types can even make fuel. They can turn waste into ethanol. This is a type of fuel for power. These tiny germs are very busy in our world.
