Clostridium botulinum

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Clostridium botulinum is a tiny germ found in soil. It is shaped like a rod. This germ is an anaerobe. This means it needs an environment with no oxygen to live. It can make a very strong toxin. A toxin is a poisonous substance. This toxin is the deadliest substance ever recorded. It can cause a disease called botulism. Botulism makes muscles weak and can stop them from moving.

These germs can make hard shells called spores. These spores help the germ survive in tough places. They can even live in boiling water. When spores find the right food, they grow. They can grow in canned food if it is not heated enough. This makes gas. The gas can make cans bulge or look misshapen.

People can get sick from eating bad food. They can also get sick from a wound. You can stop these germs by using high heat. You can also use high acid. For example, pickles are safe because they are very acidic. This keeps the germs from growing.
