He was born in 1748 in Talloires. This place was near Annecy in the Duchy of Savoy. He studied medicine in Chambéry and Turin. Later, he became a famous member of the Academy of Science in 1780. He even served as the vice president of the French Senate in 1804. His work changed how we understand the world of science.

Berthollet found new ways to use chemicals in daily life. He was the first to show that chlorine gas could bleach things. In 1789, he made a special liquid in his Paris laboratory. He passed chlorine gas through a solution of sodium carbonate. This created a liquid called "Eau de Javel," or Javel water. This liquid is a weak solution of sodium hypochlorite. He also produced a strong bleach called potassium chlorate. Scientists call this potassium chlorate "Berthollet's Salt" to honor him.

He helped create a new way to name chemical substances. This system is called chemical nomenclature. He worked with Antoine Lavoisier and other scientists to build it. This system is still the basis for naming compounds today. In 1788, they published a book called Méthode de Nomenclature Chimique. This book won a special award in 2015 for its big breakthrough. Berthollet also studied how gases are made. In 1785, he found the parts of the gas called ammonia.

Berthollet was a pioneer in studying how reactions work. He was one of the first to see reverse chemical reactions. This idea helps explain chemical equilibrium, which is a steady balance. He had a long debate with a chemist named Joseph Proust. Proust thought chemical parts always stay in a fixed ratio. Berthollet thought these ratios could change based on the starting materials. Later, scientists found some compounds do not follow Proust's rule. These special compounds are called berthollides after Berthollet.

Many famous groups gave him awards for his hard work. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1789. He also joined science groups in Sweden, the Netherlands, and Scotland. He even became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1822. Berthollet traveled to Egypt as part of a group with Napoleon. He was a member of the Institut d'Égypte. His life of discovery helped lead to the modern science we use today.
