He was born in 1748. He studied medicine before he studied science.

Berthollet helped make a system of names for chemicals. This is called chemical nomenclature. It helped scientists name things in a clear way.

He also studied how to make colors fade. He used chlorine gas to do this. He made a liquid called "Eau de Javel." This liquid is a bleaching agent. It helps clean things by taking away color.

He studied how chemicals react. He found that some reactions can go in reverse. This helps us understand chemical equilibrium. This is when chemical changes stay in a steady balance. Berthollet also found the parts of a gas called ammonia.

He traveled to Egypt with Napoleon. He was a member of a group of scientists there. He won many honors from science groups in other lands. People even named some special compounds after him. These are called berthollides.
