Classification

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine you have a big box of toys. You might put all the cars in one pile. You might put all the blocks in another. This is called classification. It means putting things into groups. We call these groups classes or categories.

People use this way to sort many things. Doctors use tests to find out why you are sick. Computers use it to find spam emails. Even people use it to decide who gets a driving license.

Some tasks have only two groups. This is called binary classification. Other tasks have three or more groups. This is called multiclass classification.

We can check if our sorting is right. This is called measuring accuracy. We want to know if we are right or wrong. There is no single best way to sort everything. Different jobs use different tools to check their work. Doctors use tools like sensitivity. People who find data use tools like precision. We use these tools to pick the best way to group things.
