Clair Patterson was a scientist who studied rocks. He wanted to know how old the Earth is. He used a special way to date rocks. This is called lead-lead dating. He looked at tiny parts of a meteorite. A meteorite is a rock from space.

By studying these space rocks, he found a big answer. He calculated that the Earth is 4.55 billion years old. Before his work, people thought it was much younger.

Clair also found a problem with lead. Lead is a metal that can be toxic. Toxic means it can be harmful to living things. He found lead in the air and in food. He saw that lead from car gas was making the air dirty.

To get the right facts, he built a clean room. This is a lab that is very, very clean. He made sure no dust or lead could get in.

His hard work helped stop lead from being in gas and food cans. This helped keep people much safer.
