Charles David Keeling was a scientist who studied the air. He wanted to know how much carbon dioxide was in our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. This gas helps trap heat in the air.

Keeling built a new tool. It could measure gas with great accuracy. He used it to study air near Big Sur. He found that carbon dioxide levels were rising. Later, he worked at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. This base is two miles above sea level.

Keeling found that gas levels change with the seasons. In the spring, levels go down. This happens because plants grow and use the gas. But the overall amount of gas keeps going up. This steady rise is called the Keeling Curve.

His work showed that gas grew from 315 parts per million in 1958. By 2005, it reached 380 parts per million. This rise is linked to fossil fuel emissions. His data is the longest record of its kind in the world. It helps us see how our planet is changing.
