Charles David Keeling was a famous American scientist. He spent his life studying the air around our planet. He wanted to know how much carbon dioxide was in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. This gas acts like a blanket to trap heat. Keeling's work helped us understand how this gas affects our world. His findings showed that carbon dioxide levels were rising steadily. This discovery changed how we think about the Earth's climate.

Keeling used a special way to track these changes. First, he built a new tool at Caltech. This device could measure carbon dioxide with very high accuracy. He tested it by camping at Big Sur. Later, he moved his work to Hawaii. He used funding from the International Geophysical Year to build a base. This base was at the Mauna Loa Observatory. It sits two miles above sea level.

Keeling's journey into science began in Pennsylvania. He was born in Scranton in 1928. His father helped him love looking at the stars. His mother helped him love playing music. Keeling studied chemistry at the University of Illinois. He earned his PhD from Northwestern University in 1953. He worked with a chemist named Malcolm Dole. Later, he joined the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1956. He became a professor there in 1968.

His data shows many important numbers. In 1958, the air had 315 parts per million of carbon dioxide. By the year 2005, it reached 380 parts per million. This rise is linked to fossil fuel emissions. Keeling also noticed that the levels change every year. In the spring, levels drop because plants grow. This happens in the northern hemisphere. The graph of this rise is called the Keeling Curve.

We see Keeling's legacy in many places today. His Keeling Curve is carved into a wall in Washington. It is also engraved in bronze at Mauna Loa. Many people use his work to study the environment. His son, Ralph Keeling, is also a climate scientist. Keeling loved the outdoors and went hiking often. He even loved to play the piano very well. His life's work helps us watch our changing planet.
