Michael E. Mann is a scientist who studies our changing world. He is a climatologist and a geophysicist. A climatologist studies how weather patterns change over very long periods. A geophysicist studies how the physical Earth works. Today, he is the director of a center at the University of Pennsylvania. His work helps us understand the history of our planet's temperature. He looks at how the climate has changed over the last thousand years. This helps people understand what is happening to our world right now.

To learn about the past, Mann uses a special way of working. He looks for clues called proxies. These are things like tree rings, ice cores, corals, and lake sediments. These clues help scientists see what the weather was like long ago. Mann uses math to find patterns in these clues. He uses a method called principal component analysis. This helps him take many different sets of data and turn them into a small number of useful pieces. This way, he can see how different parts of the world changed at the same time.

Mann's journey into science began in Massachusetts. He was born in 1965 and grew up in Amherst. He studied physics and applied math at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated with honors in 1989. Later, he went to Yale University for more study. At Yale, he worked with a scientist named Barry Saltzman. This helped him move from studying tiny particles to studying the whole climate. He earned his PhD in geology and geophysics in 1998.

One of Mann's most famous discoveries happened in 1998 and 1999. He worked with Raymond S. Bradley and Malcolm K. Hughes. In 1998, they published a paper in the journal Nature. In 1999, they made a reconstruction of temperatures from the last 1,000 years. This work was called the "hockey stick graph." It got this name because of its unique shape. The graph showed that temperatures stayed relatively steady before rising quickly. This research was part of the IPCC reports. These reports helped the IPCC win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Mann has shared his findings through many different ways. He has written more than 200 scientific papers. He has also written six books for readers. Some of his books include "The New Climate War" and "Our Fragile Moment." He also helped start a website called RealClimate to talk about science. His work connects math and history to the air we breathe. By looking at the past, he helps us prepare for the future. He shows us how things like greenhouse gases change our world.
