Cirrostratus cloud

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Cirrostratus clouds live very high in the sky. They are thin and spread out in wide sheets. These clouds are made of ice crystals. These crystals are tiny bits of frozen water.

Because they are so thin, they are hard to see. People sometimes call the sky "milky sunshine" when these clouds are present. This name describes the milky look of the sky. They can also make plane trails stay visible for an hour.

These clouds work in a few different ways. One type is called cirrostratus nebulosus. This type looks like a smooth, featureless veil. It can create a halo around the moon. A halo is a bright ring of light. Another type is called cirrostratus fibratus. This type has a fibrous texture. It looks like many small threads.

This type does not produce halos. Some versions can even look wavy or have close patterns.

Scientists use special codes to name these clouds. They use the SYNOP code to track them. If the cloud is a high fibrous sheet, it is coded as CH8. It might also be CH5 or CH6. These codes depend on how much of the sky is covered. If the cloud covers the whole sky like a veil, it is nebulosus. This type is coded as CH7. These names help people study the sky.

These clouds tell us much about the weather. They often show that a warm front is near. A front is a place where different air masses meet. If they appear, rain or snow might come soon. It could arrive in 6 to 24 hours. If the front moves fast, it might arrive in 6 to 8 hours. If the clouds are broken, the front might be weak. This could mean only light drizzle will fall.

Cirrostratus clouds link to many other types of clouds. They can form from other clouds that change shape. For example, a thundercloud can flatten out to become one. This is called cumulonimbogenitus. They can also come from cirrus clouds. These clouds are often found above other clouds. You might see cumulus clouds sitting below them. This happens because the air is very stable there.
