earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

High in the sky, special clouds can form. These are called polar stratospheric clouds. They live in the stratosphere. This layer of our air is usually very dry. It rarely has clouds at all.

These clouds only appear during the cold polar winter. They are very important to study. They tell us about the health of our air.

These clouds form when it gets extremely cold. The temperature must drop below -78 degrees Celsius.

In the Antarctic, it is often cold enough for these clouds. In the Arctic, such cold is much rarer. The clouds form in two different ways. One way makes tiny liquid drops. The other way makes ice crystals. These crystals form when the air is very cold.

Scientists group these clouds into two main types. Type I clouds are made of liquid droplets. These droplets contain water and nitric acid or sulfuric acid.

Type II clouds are made only of water ice. These ice clouds are called nacreous clouds. The name comes from nacre, which means mother of pearl. They look very bright and colorful. They show many beautiful shades.

Type I clouds can be a problem for our planet. They help create ozone holes. This happens through a specific way it works. The clouds support chemical reactions. These reactions produce active chlorine. This chlorine then destroys the ozone layer.

The clouds also remove nitric acid from the air. This changes how nitrogen and chlorine move. This process makes the ozone depletion even worse. Type II clouds are not harmful like this.

Because these clouds are so high, they look amazing. They catch sunlight from below the horizon. You can see them during civil twilight. This is when the sun is between 1 and 6 degrees below the horizon.

They shine brightly before dawn or after dusk. In the Northern Hemisphere, mountains can help. Mountains can create waves in the air. These waves can make lens-shaped clouds. They are called lenticular clouds.
