Cirrocumulus clouds are special high-altitude clouds. They belong to one of three main groups of clouds found high in the troposphere.

These clouds often look like white, patchy sheets with ripples or small tufts. They do not have gray shading. Each tiny part of the patch is called a cloudlet. A single cloudlet is very small. It looks no larger than a finger held at arm's length. Some people call these patterns a mackerel sky because they look like fish scales.

These clouds work in a very interesting way. Most of a cirrocumulus cloud is made of ice crystals. However, they also hold a small amount of liquid water. This water is in a supercooled state. This means the water stays liquid even though it is very cold. Often, the ice crystals cause this water to freeze very fast. This change turns the cloud into a cirrostratus cloud. This process can also create virga. Virga is ice or snow that falls but evaporates before it hits the ground.

Scientists use different names to describe the shapes these clouds take. One type is called cirrocumulus stratiformis, which looks like flat sheets. Another is cirrocumulus lenticularis, which has a lens shape with tapered ends. There is also cirrocumulus castellanus, which looks like small towers or turrets. The tufted version is called cirrocumulus floccus. Some clouds have a wavy base, which is called the undulatus variety. Others have circular holes from air moving down, called the lacunosus variety.

We can find these clouds at many different heights. They usually live very high up in the sky. In the Arctic, they can appear as low as 2,000 meters. Weather reporting standards, like the Canadian MANOBS, suggest different heights for different seasons. In the summer, they might be at 6,000 meters. In the winter, they may be at 4,000 meters. Cirrocumulus clouds are often found near the leading edge of a warm front.

Watching these clouds can help you guess the weather. If they spread across the sky with other clouds, rain might come in 8 to 10 hours. Small patches of these clouds often mean the good weather will stay. If you see them after it has rained, the weather is likely to improve. These clouds are also famous for being beautiful. At sunrise or sunset, they reflect red, yellow, orange, and purple light.
