Each small part is called a cloudlet. A cloudlet is no larger than a finger held at arm's length. Some people call these patterns a mackerel sky.

These clouds are very cold. Most of the cloud is made of ice crystals. They also have a small amount of liquid water. This water is in a supercooled state. This means it stays liquid even when it is very cold. The ice crystals can make the water freeze fast. This changes the cloud into a cirrostratus cloud. This change can make virga. Virga is rain or snow that evaporates before it hits the ground.

Cirrocumulus clouds are often very beautiful. They reflect red and yellow light during sunrise and sunset. If you see these clouds spread across the sky, rain may come in 8 to 10 hours. Small patches might mean the good weather will stay. If you see them after rain, the weather may get better.
