They are made of tiny liquid droplets or ice crystals. Most clouds on Earth are made of water. But clouds on other planets can be made of methane or ammonia.

Clouds form when air cools down. This can happen when air rises. One way is through adiabatic cooling. This is when air rises and gets colder. When the air reaches its dew point, it becomes saturated. This means the air holds as much water as it can. The water then sticks to tiny bits of dust or salt. These bits are called condensation nuclei.

Clouds can change how warm the Earth feels. Some clouds reflect rays from the Sun. This can help cool the Earth. Other clouds trap heat from the ground. This can cause a warming effect.

Scientists study clouds. This science is called nephology. People use different names for clouds. In the troposphere, the layer closest to Earth, we use Latin names. This system was started by Luke Howard in 1802. He used names like cumulus or stratus.
