Sometimes these clouds make a halo. A halo is a bright ring around the moon. This happens when the cloud is a type called nebulosus. This type looks like a smooth, featureless veil. Other clouds look different. The type called fibratus has a fibrous texture. This means it looks like many small threads.

These clouds can tell us about the weather. They often show that a warm front is near. A front is a place where air masses meet. If they appear, rain or snow might come soon. It might arrive in 6 to 24 hours. If the clouds are broken, the front may be weak. This might mean only light drizzle will fall. Cirrostratus clouds also make the sky look milky. They can also make plane trails stay in the sky for an hour. They stay very high up in the air.
