It is often called mercury ore. This is because it is the main source used to get mercury. Cinnabar is made of mercury sulfide. This means it is a mix of mercury and sulfur.

People find cinnabar near volcanoes. It also grows near hot springs.

The mineral is very heavy. It is also quite hard. Its hardness is between 2.0 and 2.5 on the Mohs scale. This scale measures how easy it is to scratch a mineral.

For a long time, people used cinnabar for its color. They made a red pigment called vermilion.

In China, people used it to color lacquerware. This is a type of shiny coating for objects. In ancient Rome, people used it as paint for walls. But the paint would turn dark if it sat in the sun.

We must be careful with cinnabar today. It can be toxic, which means it is poisonous. The mercury inside can make people very sick. Ancient workers knew this was dangerous. They often got sick from breathing in fumes while working.
