For a long time, people made this color by grinding cinnabar into a fine powder. The size of the powder bits changes the color. Large bits make a duller red. Small bits make a bright orange-red.

In the 9th century, people found a new way to make it. They mixed mercury with sulfur to make a black powder. They heated this in a flask. The powder turned into a vapor. It then cooled into a bright red solid.

Many cultures used this color. In China, artists mixed it with tree sap to make lacquerware.
