Despite its beauty, vermilion has a notable chemical weakness. It is liable to darken over time, often developing a purplish-gray sheen on its surface. This happens when the pigment is exposed to air. Cennino Cennini noted that it is more resistant when used on wooden panels than when applied to walls. Recent research suggests that light and chlorine ions may help decompose the vermilion into elemental mercury, which appears black when finely dispersed. This instability is one reason why many artists eventually moved away from the material.

In the 20th century, the high cost and toxicity of vermilion led to its replacement. Most European painters switched to a synthetic pigment called cadmium red. While cadmium can also be toxic, it provides a similar color and opacity. Today, genuine vermilion is still produced, mostly in China, and is labeled as PR-106 on paint tubes. This synthetic version is actually of higher quality than the old method of grinding raw cinnabar because it contains fewer impurities. It remains a significant part of the history of color and art.
