It is a heavy, silvery-white metal that is famous for its unusual state of matter. While most metals are solid at room temperature, mercury is the only metal known to be liquid at standard temperature and pressure. Other metals like caesium, gallium, and rubidium melt just slightly above room temperature, but mercury remains liquid. It is often called quicksilver because of its shiny, liquid appearance. This element is highly dense, reaching 13.69 g/cm³ in its liquid state. Because of this high density, a metal pound coin can actually float on top of it.

This floating happens due to the buoyancy force and the strong surface tension of the liquid.

The physical properties of mercury are shaped by complex atomic interactions. It has a melting point of −38.83 °C and a boiling point of 356.73 °C. These are the lowest melting and boiling points of any stable metal. Scientists believe this happens because of lanthanide contraction and relativistic contraction. These processes reduce the orbit radius of the outermost electrons, which weakens the metallic bonding. When mercury freezes into a solid, its volume decreases by 3.59%. Its density increases from 13.69 g/cm³ as a liquid to 14.184 g/cm³ as a solid. Solid mercury is quite unique because it is malleable and ductile. This means it is soft enough to be cut with a knife.

Mercury has many interesting chemical behaviors, especially when it interacts with other metals. It can dissolve metals like gold and silver to form a mixture called an amalgam.

An amalgam is an alloy created when mercury mixes with another metal. While many metals form amalgams, iron is a notable exception. Despite its many uses, mercury is a dangerous substance that requires careful handling. It is toxic to the nervous system, the immune system, and the kidneys in humans and animals. Toxicity can occur through direct exposure or through biomagnification, where mercury builds up in the food chain. Because of these risks, modern safety protocols are very strict. If a spill occurs, specialized kits are used to clean it up. These kits often use sulfur flakes to absorb the metal, along with activated carbon and powdered zinc.
