Cinnabar is a striking mineral known for its bright scarlet or brick-red color.

It is actually a type of mercury(II) sulfide, which is a mix of mercury and sulfur. This mineral is very important because it is the most common source used to find elemental mercury. People also use it to make a brilliant red pigment called vermilion. Cinnabar has a very high density, with a specific gravity of about 8.1. It is also quite hard, measuring between 2.0 and 2.5 on the Mohs scale.

This mineral is quite special because it has a very high refractive index. This means it bends light in a very noticeable way.

This mineral usually forms in specific ways deep underground. It often appears as veins filling cracks in rocks. These veins are usually found near volcanic activity or alkaline hot springs.

The mineral is deposited by warm water solutions that move up toward the surface. These solutions are called epithermal solutions. As the water moves, it leaves behind the cinnabar in shapes like thick plates or slender prisms. Sometimes, the crystals even grow together in a way called twinning. The way the atoms are arranged is called a trigonal crystal system. This structure is what gives the mineral its beautiful red color.

Humans have discovered and used cinnabar for thousands of years. People in the Near East used it as a red cosmetic long ago. In China, the Yangshao culture used it to color stoneware.

The Olmec culture in the New World also used it. During the Roman Empire, people used it as a special paint for indoor walls. However, the paint would turn dark if it was left outside in the sun. In the Song dynasty, people in China used it to color lacquerware. This was a popular way to make beautiful, decorated objects.

Many famous places around the world have large deposits of cinnabar. The Almadén mine in Spain is one of the most important.

This mine was used from Roman times all the way until 2001. Other places where cinnabar is found include Giza in Egypt and various spots in California. You can also find it in the Philippines, Slovenia, and Italy. In the United States, it has been found in places like Nevada, Texas, and Alaska. These locations help scientists and miners gather the mercury and pigments we use.

While cinnabar is beautiful, it can be very dangerous to handle. The mercury inside it is toxic, which means it can poison people.

Ancient Romans actually knew this and saw it as a sickness for workers. People who mined it could suffer from shaking or even death. This happened because they breathed in toxic fumes during the work. Today, we take great care when using it. In modern jewelry, we often use a safe resin instead of the red pigment. We now know how to respect the power of this bright red mineral.
