It is made of arsenic sulfide. This means it contains two elements. You can find it near hot springs. It also grows in volcanic areas.

Long ago, artists loved this mineral. It was a rare way to make bright yellow paint. The artist Raphael used it in his painting, the Sistine Madonna.

Another artist, Tintoretto, used it to show gold details.

Orpiment is also related to a mineral called realgar. Realgar is often orange or red. In China, the names for these two are special. Orpiment is called "female yellow." Realgar is called "male yellow." This shows how they often grow together.

People do not use orpiment for art much today. It is very toxic, which means it is poisonous. It can also change when it touches light or water. It can turn white and crumble. New types of yellow paint are safer to use now.
