Throughout a career spanning 34 years, he achieved significant success on both stage and screen. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his portrayal of the iconic superhero Superman in a film series released between 1978 and 1987. His professional excellence earned him several prestigious honors, including a British Academy Film Award, an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Beyond his artistic achievements, Reeve was a dedicated advocate for various social and environmental causes. He transformed his personal challenges into a platform for global activism.

Reeve's journey into the performing arts began early in his life. Born in New York City, he discovered a passion for theater when he was only nine years old. He pursued formal training at Cornell University and the Juilliard School. At Juilliard, the selection process was incredibly competitive. Approximately 2,000 students auditioned for only 20 available places in the freshman class. Reeve was one of the few selected for the school's Advanced Program, alongside fellow actor Robin Williams. This rigorous training provided the foundation for his transition from student to professional performer.

His early professional years were marked by intense dedication and occasional hardship. To fund his studies at Juilliard, Reeve acted in the soap opera *Love of Life* starting in 1974. This role required him to balance television production with his academic responsibilities. He also worked closely with the legendary actress Katharine Hepburn in the Broadway play *A Matter of Gravity*. During this period, Reeve's commitment to his schedule led to physical exhaustion. He once fainted on stage due to malnutrition caused by working too many hours without proper meals. Despite these difficulties, his performances received favorable reviews and established his reputation.

Reeve's career reached new heights with the release of the *Superman* films.

After achieving massive fame, he made a conscious choice to pursue different types of work. He often turned down high-budget movie roles to focus on independent films and complex stage plays. He appeared in critically acclaimed projects such as *Somewhere in Time* (1980) and *The Remains of the Day* (1993). He also performed in London's West End in the play *The Aspern Papers*. This variety demonstrated his range as a classical actor and his commitment to the craft of storytelling.

In 1995, a sudden accident profoundly changed the course of Reeve's life. While participating in an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia, he was thrown from his horse. The accident resulted in him being paralyzed from the neck down.

For the remainder of his life, Reeve relied on a wheelchair and a ventilator to assist with breathing. While this was a massive physical change, it did not end his influence on the world. Instead, it redirected his energy toward intense advocacy and humanitarian work.

Reeve became a powerful voice for the disability community and scientific progress. He lobbied extensively for increased spinal injury research, specifically supporting human embryonic stem cell research. He also fought for improved insurance coverage for individuals living with disabilities. To organize these efforts, he led the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and co-founded the Reeve-Irvine Research Center. His leadership helped bring attention to the needs of those with spinal cord injuries. He even shared his personal journey through two autobiographical books, *Still Me* and *Nothing Is Impossible: Reflections on a New Life*.

His legacy is preserved through both his art and his activism.
