Christian ethics, often called moral theology, is a complex system of belief. It examines how people should live and act based on Christian principles. For most of history, it was a branch of theology. However, during the Enlightenment in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it became a separate field. Today, many scholars see it as a bridge. It sits between the study of theology and the social sciences.

This ethical system uses several different methods to determine right from wrong. One method is virtue ethics. This focuses on developing a person's moral character. Another method is deontological ethics. This emphasizes duty and following specific rules or divine commands. These rules determine if an action is required, forbidden, or permitted.

Christian ethics also incorporates natural law ethics. This is the belief that human nature informs how we should live. Because humans are seen as rational and capable of discernment, they can understand morality. Some believe these moral laws are innate or "written on their hearts." This means people can use reason to find right actions even without reading scripture.

There are also movements known as prophetic ethics. Instead of focusing only on individual morality, this approach focuses on social justice. It looks at the "kingdom ideals" of Jesus and the group dimensions of sin. This perspective often challenges existing social orders. Examples include liberation theology, feminist theology, and the Social Gospel movement. These groups engage with the world to address social inequality.

The history of these ideas began in early Christianity. This period lasted from approximately 27 AD to 325 AD. Early Christians lived in a hostile Roman Empire. They used the teachings of Jesus to address issues like slavery and the role of women. After Christianity became legal in the 4th century, these teachings grew more sophisticated. Figures like Augustine of Hippo helped define Christian thought for several centuries.

During the Middle Ages, scholars worked to harmonize faith with logic. This era saw the rise of scholasticism. This movement attempted to combine Christian thought with the philosophy of Aristotle. Thomas Aquinas, who lived from 1225 to 1274, was a major figure. He wrote the *Summa Theologica*. His work led to the school of Thomism, which is still used in the Roman Catholic Church today.

The Reformation of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries brought more changes. Martin Luther argued that moral effort is a response to God's grace. John Calvin developed ideas about how God works through civil governments. Calvin believed all people have a "vocation," or a calling. This idea gave a sense of sacredness to ordinary work. This contributed to the development of the Protestant work ethic.

Today, Christian ethicists use many tools to study these ancient questions. They use the Bible, reason, and philosophy. They also look to the social sciences to understand modern society. While there are many different perspectives, they all seek to connect faith to life. Some principles remain subjects of intense debate and reinterpretation. This shows that the study of ethics is a living, changing field.
