It is also known as moral theology. For a long time, it was just one part of studying religion. Today, many scholars see it as a bridge. It sits between the study of theology and the social sciences.

People use this field to look at personal choices and how society works. It helps them understand how faith and behavior connect in the real world.

There are several different ways to look at these ideas. One way is called virtue ethics. This focuses on building a strong and good character. Another way is called deontological ethics. This focuses on doing one's duty and following rules.

Some people also believe in natural law. This is the idea that humans can use reason to know right from wrong. They believe these truths are written on their hearts. This means people can understand how to live well even without special instructions.

These ideas have a very long history. Christian ethics began during the early years of the faith. This period lasted from about 27 AD to 325 AD.

In the Middle Ages, thinkers tried to combine faith with logic. A famous thinker named Thomas Aquinas lived from 1225 to 1274. He wrote a major work called the Summa Theologica. Later, during the Reformation in the 1500s, new ideas emerged. Leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin changed how people thought about work and God's will.

Many different groups have added to these teachings over time. Some movements focus on social justice and helping others. This is sometimes called prophetic ethics.

It looks at how groups of people act together. Some thinkers use this to challenge unfair systems in society. Other traditions, like the Social Gospel, look for ways to engage with the world. These groups often focus on the needs of the community rather than just one person.

Today, people still use many tools to study these big questions. They look at the Bible to find rules for conduct. They also use reason and philosophy to think deeply.

Some even use the social sciences to understand human behavior. This helps them make sense of modern problems. Even though people sometimes disagree on the details, these studies remain very important. They help people connect their deep beliefs to the way they treat others every day.
