Charity works in two main parts. First, people use it to love God above all things. Second, they use it to love their neighbor as themselves. This includes having love for oneself as well. Some believe this love is a gift put into the soul. It lives within a person's will. This gift helps people act with joy, peace, and mercy.

A famous thinker named Thomas Aquinas wrote about this. He called charity the most excellent of all virtues. To him, it was like a friendship between man and God. He believed charity was a must for true happiness. Aquinas said this love extends to both God and neighbors. Other writers like Paul also spoke of it. Paul said that faith, hope, and love remain. He said love is the greatest of those three.

The Bible contains many facts about this idea. The book of 1 John says that God is love. Some older bibles use the word charity for this. In 1 Peter, it says charity covers many sins. The early Church also looked at the love of the poor. They saw this as a crown jewel of virtues. Even in 2005, Pope Benedict XVI wrote about this. His paper was called Deus caritas est.

This idea links many things together in faith. It shows how humans can reflect the nature of God. People believe God gives humans the power to act like Him. This happens when people show love to others. It treats every person as a beloved child of God. This way of living is a big part of Christian ethics. It is a way to show dignity to everyone.
