On March 15, 2019, a very sad event happened in Christchurch, New Zealand. This event involved two attacks at places called mosques. Mosques are buildings where Muslims go to pray. The first attack happened at the Al Noor Mosque in Riccarton at 1:40 p.m.

Almost immediately after, a second attack took place at the Linwood Islamic Centre at 1:52 p.m. These attacks were the deadliest in the modern history of New Zealand. Many people were hurt and 51 people lost their lives during these events.

The person responsible for the attacks was a 28-year-old man from Australia named Brenton Tarrant. He used guns to carry out his plan at both locations. He also used the internet to show the first attack live on Facebook. Before the attacks, he wrote a long document called a manifesto. He shared this document with many people online and through email. This document explained his hateful ideas and his reasons for the attacks. He wanted to spread fear using the internet and his actions.

History shows that Tarrant had been planning this for a long time. He began his planning about two years before the attacks happened. He even used a drone to look at the Al Noor Mosque from a nearby park. He also used the internet to find maps and schedules for the mosques. He wanted to know when the most people would be there. Tarrant arrived in New Zealand in August 2017 and lived in Dunedin. He had a license to own guns and bought many weapons and bullets.

During the attacks, some people showed great courage to help others. At the Al Noor Mosque, a man named Naeem Rashid tried to stop the attacker. He was very brave, but he was also killed during the event. At the Linwood Islamic Centre, a man named Abdul Aziz Wahabzada also acted bravely. He threw a payment terminal at the attacker to try to stop him. These people were very brave during a very scary time. The police arrived quickly to try to help the people in danger.

Tarrant was caught by police after a short car chase. In 2020, a court sentenced him to life in prison without parole. This means he will stay in prison for the rest of his life. The United Nations also took action to help prevent more hate. They named March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
