Chinatown is a famous mystery movie released in 1974.

It is considered a landmark of the film noir genre. This style often uses dark moods and psychological drama. The story takes place in 1930s Los Angeles. It stars Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. The film was directed by Roman Polanski. It was written by Robert Towne. Many people believe it is one of the greatest films ever made.

The story follows a private investigator named J. J. "Jake" Gittes. A woman named Evelyn Mulwray hires him to follow her husband. His name is Hollis Mulwray, and he is a water engineer. Gittes soon finds himself in a very deep mystery. He learns that water is being released from a reservoir during a drought. He also discovers that people are fighting over land and water rights. The plot involves many secrets and dangerous people.

The movie was inspired by real events in California. These events were known as the California water wars. During this time, people fought over water rights in the Owens Valley. These rights helped Los Angeles grow by getting water from far away. The character Hollis Mulwray was loosely based on William Mulholland. Mulholland was a real engineer who helped build a huge aqueduct. This aqueduct was 230 miles long. It brought water to the city from the Owens Valley.

Chinatown received many big awards after it came out. It had 11 nominations at the 47th Academy Awards. These included Best Picture and Best Director. Robert Towne won the award for Best Original Screenplay. The film also won 4 Golden Globe awards. It was very successful at the British Academy Film Awards too. In 1991, the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry. This means the movie is culturally and historically significant.

This film is part of a larger idea by the writer. Robert Towne planned a trilogy about the power in Los Angeles. The first part was about water. The second part was called The Two Jakes. It was released in 1990 and starred Jack Nicholson again. That movie was about people fighting over oil in the 1940s. The third movie would have been about land. While the third film was never made, the first movie remains a masterpiece of mystery.
