Chin Peng eventually became a communist politician and a revolutionary leader. He served as the longest-running General Secretary of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM). He also commanded its armed wing, the Malayan National Liberation Army (MNLA). His leadership spanned from 1947 until the party was dissolved in 1989.

His journey into politics began during his teenage years. In 1937, he joined the Chinese Anti Enemy Backing Up Society (AEBUS). This group sent aid to China during Japanese aggression. By 1939, Chin Peng had embraced communism. He chose to attend an English-speaking school to provide cover for his underground activities. This allowed him to continue his revolutionary work without drawing too much attention. In January 1940, he became a full member of the CPM. He spent the following years organizing students, teachers, and laborers in Perak.

The Second World War significantly changed his role in the region. When Japan invaded Malaya in December 1941, many Chinese residents joined the jungle to fight. They formed the Malayan Peoples' Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA). Chin Peng acted as a liaison officer between the MPAJA and the British military. He worked closely with Force 136, a covert British resistance movement. For his service during this period, Britain awarded him the Order of the British Empire (OBE). However, this honor was later revoked by the British government due to his later actions.

After the war, Chin Peng rose to the highest levels of party leadership. He became the Secretary-General of the CPM after the previous leader, Lai Tek, was found to be a double agent. The CPM and the British government entered a period of intense conflict known as the Malayan Emergency. This period began in 1948 and lasted until 1960. The CPM sought independence for Malaya, but the British resisted their methods. The British government declared a state of emergency following the deaths of three European plantation managers in Sungai Siput.

During this time, Chin Peng became a highly wanted man. The British authorities offered a reward of $250,000 for his capture.

The conflict involved complex political and military maneuvers. The CPM established the MNLA to conduct guerrilla warfare from the jungle. They responded to the banning of their trade unions and the arrest of their members. While Chin Peng claimed he was unaware of specific violent plots, many historians link him to the escalation of the conflict. The British government conducted raids in major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to dismantle the party. Despite the intensity of the fighting, the CPM did not succeed in its goal of taking control during the Emergency.

Following the independence of Malaya, Chin Peng lived in exile. He moved through China and Thailand. He did not stop his political activities entirely. Between 1968 and 1989, he led a second guerrilla campaign against the now-independent Malaysian government. This second struggle also ended without success. In 1989, a final peace agreement was reached. This agreement resulted in the permanent dissolution of the CPM. This marked the end of his decades-long leadership of the communist movement in the region.

Chin Peng's legacy remains a subject of intense debate in Malaysia. His detractors view him as a terrorist and an ideological fanatic. They point to the atrocities committed by the MNLA during the Emergency. Conversely, some people see him as an anti-imperialist hero. They credit him with contributing to the movement for Malayan independence from British colonial rule. At the time of his death in Bangkok in 2013, he was 88 years old. He was the last surviving postwar revolutionary leader from Asia who had fought against colonialism.
