He was a highly versatile artist who worked as an actor, filmmaker, musician, and composer. His creative output helped shape the cultural heritage of Malaysia, Singapore, and the broader Malay-speaking world known as the Nusantara. Throughout his career, he bridged different art forms to create a unique cultural identity. Today, he is remembered as a true people's artist whose influence continues to inspire new generations of creators.

Ramlee's artistic process involved a deep integration of music and film. As a filmmaker, he was often involved in every stage of production. He wrote screenplays, directed scenes, acted in roles, and composed the musical scores. His music often incorporated traditional Malay elements. He blended these with a cosmopolitan sound. This sound included music from bangsawan and ronggeng theatres, as well as the keroncong genre. This combination allowed his work to resonate with a wide variety of audiences across the region.

His career can be divided into several distinct stages. His early years involved winning singing competitions and playing the violin in a kroncong band. In 1948, he entered the film industry in a supporting role in the film Chinta. He played a villain and provided vocals as a playback singer. By 1950, he achieved a major milestone in the film Bakti. In this film, he became the first actor to sing in his own voice instead of using a playback singer. His career reached a "golden age" between 1955 and 1964 while working at Malay Film Productions in Singapore.

During this golden age, Ramlee directed and starred in many of his most acclaimed works. He directed the famous Bujang Lapok comedy series. One film in this series, Pendekar Bujang Lapok, won a Best Comedy award at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival. He also won the Best Actor award for his performance in Anak-ku Sazali. In 1964, he moved to Kuala Lumpur to work with Merdeka Film Productions. This later period was more difficult. He faced constant sabotage from other Malaysian artists and was less successful in this new environment.
