He wanted to discard the name "Little," which he viewed as a name imposed by white slavemasters.
After his parole in 1952, Malcolm's influence grew rapidly. He became the public face of the Nation of Islam for twelve years. He served as a minister in several cities, including Detroit and Philadelphia. 
In the 1960s, Malcolm's religious and political views underwent a major shift. He became disillusioned with the Nation of Islam and Elijah Muhammad. He traveled to Mecca to complete the Hajj, a holy pilgrimage. 
This conflict resulted in many death threats against him. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City. The event took place at the Audubon Ballroom. 
Malcolm X's legacy continues to influence many people worldwide. He is honored with Malcolm X Day in various American cities. Many streets and schools have been renamed in his honor.
