They are based in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. As of 2024, the nation has over 466,000 enrolled citizens. This makes them one of the largest tribal nations in the United States. The people include many different groups of descendants. Some come from the Old Cherokee Nation that moved from the Southeast. Others come from the Trail of Tears or the Natchez Nation. They also include descendants of Cherokee Freedmen.

The nation runs itself with a strong government. This government has three main parts. These are the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

They use a constitution to make their rules. A new version was ratified in 2003. The nation also works hard to keep its culture alive. They run schools that teach the Cherokee language. They even publish the Cherokee Phoenix. This was the very first Native American newspaper.

History has been both hard and full of change. Long ago, the Cherokee had to move from their homes in the Southeast. After the American Civil War, a treaty in 1866 promised them a permanent home.

This land became part of what is now Oklahoma. In the early 1900s, the tribal government almost disappeared. For a short time, the federal government appointed chiefs. These leaders sometimes served for only a few days. People called them "Chief for a Day."

There are many important names and dates to know. In 1938, the tribe elected J. B. Milam as Principal Chief. Later, in 1985, Wilma Mankiller became the first female chief.

The nation also has a reservation that covers 14 counties in Oklahoma. These include places like Adair, Cherokee, and Muskogee counties. In 2020 and 2021, courts decided the reservation status was restored. This was based on the McGirt v. Oklahoma legal case. This means the nation has jurisdiction over that land.

Learning about the Cherokee Nation helps us understand modern history. It shows how people fight for their rights and their land. For example, the Cherokee Freedmen fought for their citizenship. They were descendants of Black people who were once enslaved. For a long time, they were not treated fairly.
