These waters separate the living from the dead.

In old times, people had special ways to help souls. They often placed coins in the mouth of the dead. These coins were called Charon's obols. The money helped pay for the boat ride. If a soul could not pay, they had to wait. The poet Virgil said they waited for one hundred years.

Artists show Charon in many ways. Some draw him as a rough sailor. Others show him as a scary old man. The poet Dante wrote that Charon had eyes of fire. Today, his name lives on in space. Charon is the largest moon of Pluto. A dinosaur was also named after him. It is called Charonosaurus.
