Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi is a famous software architect and a space tourist. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, on September 10, 1948.

As a boy, he worked as a night watchman at a computer lab. He learned how to program from an engineer there. By the time he left school, he had already sold a compiler to a government department. A compiler is a special tool that helps computers understand code. Simonyi later moved to the United States to study and build a great career.

Simonyi helped create the software many people use every day. He worked at a place called Xerox PARC to help build the Xerox Alto. This was one of the very first personal computers.

Later, he joined Microsoft to lead a group that made new applications. He helped build Word and Excel, which are very popular tools. He used a strategy called a "revenue bomb" to make these programs work on different types of computers. This made his software very portable, meaning it could travel easily between different systems.

He also studied how to organize the people who write code. In 1977, he earned a PhD from Stanford University.

His research focused on a method called meta-programming. This was a way to help programmers work together more efficiently. In this system, one person acts as a designer to make big decisions. The other programmers then follow those plans to write the code. He even used a naming system called Hungarian notation at Microsoft. This system helps programmers keep track of different parts of their work.

Simonyi is also known for his amazing trips to outer space. He is the only person to pay for two separate trips to the International Space Station.

His first trip was on April 7, 2007, aboard the Soyuz TMA-10. He saw the Earth from the blackness of space and thought it looked like a grand stage set. His second trip happened on March 26, 2009, on the Soyuz TMA-14. While in space, he used a radio to talk to students in schools. He even told students that breathing Earth air feels heavy after being in space.

Beyond computers and space, Simonyi gives a lot to help others. He is a philanthropist, which is a person who gives money to help people or causes.

He has given millions of dollars to many different groups. He funded professorships at Oxford University, Stanford, and the Institute for Advanced Study. He also gave money to the Seattle Symphony and the Seattle Public Library. His foundation helped many arts and science projects grow. Even as a very wealthy man, he uses his resources to support learning and the arts.
