Charles Richter was a scientist who studied earthquakes. He was a seismologist. This means he studied how the earth shakes. He also studied the waves those shakes make.

Before his work, people used a different scale. That scale looked at how buildings moved. It also looked at how people felt the shake. This was not always a fair way to measure. It depended on how strong a building was.

Richter worked with Beno Gutenberg. They wanted a better way to measure. They used a seismograph. This is a tool that records the motion of the earth. The scale they made is called the Richter scale. It measures the magnitude, or the size, of an earthquake.

Richter chose the word magnitude. He liked how astronomers use it to measure stars. The scale uses a special math rule. This rule is called logarithmic. It means a magnitude 7 shake is ten times stronger than a 6. A magnitude 7 is also 100 times stronger than a 5.

Richter's work helped people build safer buildings. He helped make rules for how to build in places with many shakes. This helped save many lives.
