Charles Richter studied the earth. He wanted to know about shakes in the ground. These shakes are called earthquakes.

He worked with a man named Beno Gutenberg. Together, they made a way to measure shakes. This is called the Richter scale. It tells us how strong a shake is.

Before this, people used different ways to measure. Those ways were not always the same. The new scale was much better. It used a tool to record the earth moving.

This scale helps us understand the ground. It can even help us build safer buildings. Charles Richter was a very important scientist.
