Charles Ives was a famous American composer and a businessman.

He is often called an "American original" because his music was so unique. While many people know him for his art, he also worked as an actuary. An actuary is a person who studies risks for insurance companies. He even helped create modern ways to plan for a person's future wealth. Most of his business peers did not even know he was a composer. He spent his spare time writing music and playing the organ.

Ives loved to use many different sounds at once. He often used melodies from his daily life in his songs. He included church hymns and patriotic American tunes. He also used music from town parades and Saturday night dances. One famous piece is the Concord Sonata, which he wrote between 1911 and 1915.

In one part of this piece, he told the pianist to use a piece of wood. This created a massive, thick sound called a cluster chord. He even tucked famous melodies from Beethoven into his own works.

His musical journey began in Danbury, Connecticut. He was born there on October 20, 1874. His father, George Ives, was a bandleader in the Civil War.

As a young boy, Charles sat in the town square. He listened to different bands playing on different sides of the square. This helped him learn how to use many musical layers at once. His father also taught him how to write music and play instruments. This early training helped him become a very creative artist.

Ives was also a very talented athlete during his school years. He attended Yale University starting in 1894. At the Hopkins School, he served as the captain of the baseball team.

He also played on the varsity American football team at Yale. His coach even thought he could have been a great sprinter. While he loved sports, he spent much of his time on music. He wrote his first symphony as a senior thesis at Yale. He also wrote songs for political campaigns during this time.

For a long time, many people ignored Ives's music. It was often very hard for musicians to play his complex rhythms. However, other musicians like Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison helped people notice him. In 1947, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his music.
