He was an English land agent in Ireland. A land agent is a person who manages land for a wealthy owner. Boycott worked for a man named Lord Erne. His main job was to collect rent from the farmers.

This job made him very unpopular with the local people.

In the 1800s, farming was the most important work in Ireland. Most of the land was owned by a very small number of people. Many farmers rented their small farms from these wealthy owners. They often had short leases and could be evicted easily.

A group called the Irish National Land League formed to help. They wanted fair rents and for farmers to keep their land. They wanted to stop people from being forced off their farms. This group was led by people like Michael Davitt and Charles Stewart Parnell.

Things became very difficult for Boycott in 1880. The farmers wanted lower rents because the harvest was poor. Boycott asked for the full rent anyway. He even got notices to evict eleven tenants.

In response, the Land League started a campaign of isolation. Local workers refused to work on the estate. This meant there was no one to harvest the crops. Even local shops in Ballinrobe refused to serve him. This was a way to show their anger through social action.

This situation became a very big event in the news. The British government had to send help to the area. They sent over 1,000 men from the Royal Irish Constabulary. They also sent a regiment of the 19th Royal Hussars.

These men were sent to protect the people harvesting the crops. It was a very expensive job for the government. It cost at least £10,000 to harvest only £500 worth of crops. The conflict showed how much power a community could have.

Charles Boycott eventually had to leave Ireland in December 1880. He moved back to England to work in Suffolk. He lived there until he died in 1897 at age 65.

His name stayed in the English language forever. Today, a boycott is a way for people to protest. They do this by refusing to buy things or work with someone. It is a tool used to demand fairness and change.
