Chalcolithic

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Chalcolithic is a special time in human history. It is also known as the Copper Age or the Eneolithic. This period sits between the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. During this time, people began to use smelted copper for the first time. However, they did not stop using stone tools right away. Most tools were still made of stone during this era. This period was a major bridge between two ways of making things. It shows how humans slowly learned to work with metals.

People used copper in a few different ways. At first, they used a method called cold working. This meant they hammered near pure copper ores into shapes. Later, they learned how to perform copper smelting. Smelting is a way to melt metal using high heat. This process helps separate the metal from the rock. In Serbia, researchers found very old evidence of this. At a site called Belovode, people used high heat for smelting. This happened about 7,500 years ago on Rudnik mountain.

Different parts of the world had their own Copper Ages. In the Ancient Near East, it lasted for about 1,000 years. This region is often called the Fertile Crescent. Some people think lead might have been the very first metal smelted. Archaeologists found lead beads at sites like Chatal Hüyük. In Europe, the transition to the Bronze Age happened later. In Britain, the Copper Age was a short time. It lasted from about 2,500 BC to 2,200 BC. During this time, people also used gold and new types of pottery.

Many interesting items have been found from this time. In the Alps, a man named Ötzi the Iceman was discovered. He lived around 3300 BC and had a copper axe. In South Asia, people made copper bangles and arrowheads. In India, farming communities used copper and painted pottery. The Banas culture used red, white, and black designs. The Malwa culture used red or black designs on their pots. In the village of Sanauli, people found copper weapons from 1800 BC. These finds help us see how much people made.

Scientists use different names to describe this era. The name Chalcolithic comes from two Greek words. "Khalkos" means copper and "lithos" means stone. This name explains that both metals were used. In the 1870s, a scientist named Ferenc Pulszky suggested this new category. Later, John Evans noted that copper use often came before bronze. Today, experts use Copper Age, Eneolithic, and Chalcolithic to mean the same thing. These names help us understand how humans moved from stone to metal. It was a time of great change for everyone.
