Censorship is when people or groups stop information from being shared.

This can happen with books, music, or the internet. Governments and large groups often use it. Sometimes, a person even chooses to hide their own work. This is called self-censorship.

There are many reasons for censorship. Some leaders use it to keep secrets during a war. This helps keep a country safe. Other leaders use it to stay in power. They may stop people from speaking out against them.

Religious groups may also use censorship. They might remove books that do not fit their beliefs.

Some groups also use it to enforce moral rules. They might stop things they find wrong or bad.

Schools can also face censorship. This happens when people decide what history to teach. Some people want to hide hard parts of the past. This is sometimes called whitewashing. In 1766, Sweden became the first country to end censorship by law. People still debate if censorship is helpful or harmful today.
